Gifts of October ~ Day 27 ~ Share Four Somethings

Gifts of October

As October draws to a close, I’m so grateful for the many gifts these days of fall have given me. They have been colored with orange, red, and yellow and they’ve been full of joy (sometimes in the midst of pain), fellowship, and so much more! Join me as I look back over these “Gifts of October”.

Something Loved

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20 (NIV)

October has presented me with so many reasons to celebrate. It’s been a month of homecoming, reuniting, healing, giving, and oh, so much love! The first few weeks of being home after caring for my grandsons for three months were quite the rollercoaster of emotions. Knowing that the boys are now with their little brother, mom, and dad has given me such a sense of peace though. Sutton is doing so well and I’m loving that they are a family of 5 as they should be.  I will admit it hasn’t taken me too long to enjoy slowly drinking my coffee in the quiet of the morning again either.

There’s no doubt that my friends sustained me through my months away, so there was much rejoicing when we joined back together. Whether with my friend and hairdresser getting caught up and my gray covered, being treated to coffee and conversation in a quiet corner, or sitting around the table together sharing food and lots of laughter, I loved every moment of being with those who mean so much to me and who I can never express my gratitude to!

We’ve been so overwhelmed by the generosity of others these past months and October was no different. The offering of prayers, donations, support, and encouragement is something we can never repay, only hope to pay forward. October brought such a special surprise when we learned that a church in our community planned to donate the profits from their annual Fall Pot Pie Dinner to Sutton’s medical bills. You better believe we were some of the first in line to sample the delicious fare and I loved every bite AND those who gave of themselves to prepare it!

“Never stop praying.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT)

Right before I left to return home, a very special lady gifted me with the book, “Every Moment Holy.” She confided to me that it has gotten her through many life experiences and I can see why. The sacred rhythm of the liturgies sing to my soul. There are prayers for many different occasions and serve to draw us close to God in all situations. They remind me that He is present in every moment of my life, good and bad.  This book will not be put away on a shelf but at hand’s reach to read right when I need it.

“He leads me beside quiet waters.” Psalm 23:2b (NIV)

We went back and forth, you know listed the pros and cons, to decide if after my being away from home for so long and his traveling back and forth every weekend to see me, we really wanted to pack our bags and leave again. As it turns out we did and was it ever a gift! We took along the bare necessities and headed to a cozy cottage right on the lake and we didn’t leave there for most of a week. It was exactly what we both needed to refresh and for our souls to be renewed. The view was unbeatable, our days all our own, and we delighted in each other’s company. It was a true respite from the real world (almost anyway) and I treasure the time we spent together there. (P.S. we hope to go back next year!)

Something Ahead

“And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:20 (NLT)

As far as things on the calendar there’s not much there, but November brings Thanksgiving and I don’t just mean the one day holiday, I mean the attitude of giving thanks. For the past few years I’ve done a Gratitude Challenge naming something I’m thankful for each day. I’m especially looking anxiously ahead to it this year because my goodness, despite all the challenges I have so very much to be thankful for!

Well, there you go. Another month just about gone. Honestly, and I know I say this every time, but I don’t know where the days go! They just fly by. How about you? If you named YOUR “Four Somethings” what would they be? You don’t have to share them but I’d love it if you would! Just drop them in the comments. Now, I can’t wait to see what November “Somethings” come my way!

Share Four Somethings ~ September

Share Four Somethings ~ September

I know I always say this, but it feels as if I just wrote my August Four Somethings post! This month has come and gone and I’m not sure how I didn’t notice it flying by. September was full of good news though, and I can’t wait to share it with you! Here we go…

“Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him.” Psalm 127:3 (NLT)

Something Loved

It’s been the everyday little things I’ve loved this month. Bike rides at sunset, planning and digging an “underground house”, both boys back to school, wild basketball games, singing together, making cookies, and so much more. Each small moment with my grandsons has made a BIG memory that I’ll cherish always. There’s an old Oak Ridge Boys song called “Thank God For Kids” and the last chorus says:

“Thank God for kids there’s magic for a while
A special kinds of sunshine in a smile.
Do you every stop to think or wonder why?
The nearest thing to Heaven is a child.
When you get down on your knees tonight
To thank the Lord for His guiding light
Pray they turn out right.
Thank God for kids.”

Magic, smiles, sunshine, Heaven. That’s how I feel about spending time with the kids I love more than anything and I thank God for them everyday!

“When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.” Romans 12:13 (NLT)

To say I’m excited is kind of an understatement. For the first time ever, my words are actually in print! I’m so honored and grateful to be part of this beautiful journal! The “Woven Journal” by http://www.sweettothesoulministry.com is full of devotionals, articles, recipes, art, coloring pages, scripture, and more! The theme of Woven is centered around being invited and hospitality which allowed me to share the story of my first year teaching and the kind veteran teacher who took me in when I had nowhere to stay. She’s now my mother-in-love but that’s a story for another time. Writing has been my dream for a very long time and to read my own words in such a special publication is, well, just plain amazing!

“Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.” Mark 9:37 (NLT)

Something Treasured

Sutton’s homecoming! Need I say more? Those who’ve been reading along here know that for the past three months my youngest grandson has been in Nationwide Children’s Hospital after a traumatic health emergency in which he lost all of his small intestine. But God. Sutton has now been home for a little over a week and doing fantastically! Life is different but what a gift to have him reunited with his brothers and to be back to being a family of 5 living at home. And what a celebration it was! The wonderful community once again came together and had a Homecoming Drive By Parade with Fire Trucks, Police Cars, and even Silly String! It is a day I will treasure in my heart forever more.

“I remember the days of old. I ponder all your great works and think about what you have done.” Psalm 143:5 (NLT)

Something Ahead

Now that I’m also back home, I feel somewhat adrift, so I’m looking forward to trying once again to do the 31-Day Writing Challenge sponsored by Five Minute Friday Writing Community to anchor me. 31 prompts. 31 days. Can I do it? I haven’t ever completed it the times I’ve tried before, but there’s a first time for everything, right? We shall see how it goes.

I love this practice of reflecting on the month and choosing moments to share with you.  It helps me to be grateful and more aware of my blessings.  How about you? What Four Somethings would you share? I’d love for you to tell me in the comments. And don’t forget that you can always go to http://www.heathergerwing.com to read more or better yet, to join in. As always I so appreciate you taking your time to stop in here to read my ponderings.  It means more than you know!

We often think of joy and sorrow as opposites – their definitions far apart from each other. But when you’ve lived a “few” years you come to realize that they’re actually connected.  Joy and sorrow walk hand in hand together throughout our lives. Even in the most joyous times there are twinges of sorrow present; and as I’ve learned in this past month, when experiencing great, overwhelming sorrow, joy is also right there in the midst of it all.

My grandson, Sutton has been in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital for a little over two months now.  His life and ours, have changed. With that, comes the darkness of grief. But friends, I’m here to tell you that joy lights the way through it!

“Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.”
Psalm 30:5b (NLT)

“I thank my God every time I remember you.” Philippians 1:3 (NIV)

~Something Loved~

As Sutton was life-flighted to Columbus at the end of June, my husband and I were packing to make the four hour trip to be with our two older grandsons. Time passed with little talk and lots of prayer. Upon arrival we immediately went into caregiver mode. For two weeks, together we tried to put our fears and grief aside to meet all their needs. After that, my husband had to return to work and I began caring for them on my own.  I’ve been here ever since.

There’ve been days I was sure I couldn’t go on, times the boys were so upset I didn’t know what to do, moments when I had to ignore my MiMi heart to discipline, and nights when we all cried ourselves to sleep. But woven through it all has been the realization that we are making memories that we never would have under “normal” circumstances.  The funny thing is, before all this happened, I’d find myself lying awake praying that nothing would happen to me before I’d spent enough time with the boys for them to remember me. And now….here we are together! I’ve loved spending time with my grandsons; from doing simple things like playing office, to celebrating the first day of kindergarten, visiting Sutton every weekend, touring a museum together, reading bedtime stories, singing songs, and laughing…a lot. In the middle of the pain: Joy!

“Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (NLT)

~Something Read~

Living in an unfamiliar town, driving a van, having a much more active schedule, etc…. For this “comfort zone addict” gal, being away from home has been hard at times. There may even have been a bit of whining. It’s amazing though, that when I’ve had an especially challenging day, I’ll go to the mailbox and find a card from a friend or my phone will beep with a text from a loved one. Reading inspiring Bible verses, encouraging words, even old fashioned newsy letters, have brightened my days and improved my mood…a lot. In the midst of change: Joy!

“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19 (NIV)

~Something Treasured~

As parents, we hope and pray that our children, no matter their age, have friends who’ll always be there for them, a community that embraces them, and a church family to uplift them. I’ve worried about this (I know shocking, right?) But there’ve been times when these things were missing from my kid’s lives.

Thankfully, my worry was unwarranted as usual, as both our children now have a wonderful support system! Never was it more evident though, than in this last month! The outpouring of care and concern for our family through this health crisis with Sutton has been beyond amazing! It’s impossible to find the words to express the gratitude we feel. There have been T-shirt Fundraisers, a Benefit Golf Tournament, an Auction of a one-of-a-kind clock made by the Blind Clockmaker (if you’ve never seen his inspiring story, I’ll link it below), cards, gifts, meals, donations to the Ronald McDonald House, and so much more. And oh my goodness, the outpouring of prayers lifted for Sutton. It’s been miraculous really, how such a little boy has brought so many people together!

Do you remember what the Bible says happened after the Shepherds had visited Jesus in the stable then left to spread the message the Angels had given them? Yes, Mary thought about all that had happened and she kept it in her heart. That’s how I feel too. I will treasure all I’ve seen, heard, and felt this past month, keeping it close at heart, knowing there are others who’ve got this support thing down pat, and I will ponder on that…a lot! At the center of great need: Joy!

“He sets the time for sorrow and the time for joy, the time for morning and the time for dancing,” Ecclesiastes 3:4 (GNT)

~Something Ahead~

Home. That is what’s ahead!
We’re rejoicing! If everything keeps going as well as it has been, Sutton will be home in a very short time. And while it will be different, and scary, and hard, and yes, sad sometimes, it is an answer to all our prayers and a gift we’ve been given that many do not receive. In time, these months will be behind us and a new normal will develop. Doing a happy dance just thinking about it!

Having Sutton home means that I’ll go home, too. I’ll return to my normal, my hubs won’t have to live the bachelor life anymore, my schedule will be my own. These are happy things. And yet..  I’ll be leaving the boys. No more tucking them in, fixing their breakfast, watching Bluey together while eating popcorn. Mother-daughter time will be less, too. The pull of home means leaving a part of me here and I’m going to miss them…a lot! At the heart of joyously moving on: sorrow.

August for me, has been a month of ups and downs, highs and lows, and many joys and sorrow. But really, that’s life, isn’t it? As Solomon reminds us:

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:”
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NLT)

But no matter how long the season or the night, we can take comfort in knowing that “Joy comes with the morning!”

Share Four Somethings ~ February 2021

As hard as it is to believe, February has been here and is gone! Time has felt so strange! Thankfully though, slowly but surely, time is shifting a little more toward “normal” here.  Schools are back in session full time, we’ve been having in-person church, businesses are able to host more customers, and my calendar actually has writing on it in the coming weeks and months of which I am VERY thankful. Speaking of gratitude, it’s time to look back over the past month with http://www.heathergerwing.com and think about what I’ve “Loved, Read or Heard Said, Treasured, and to What’s Ahead”. Being February, it’s all about love this month! So, here we go….

February Share Four Somethings

“My loved ones, let us devote ourselves to loving one another. Love comes straight from God, and everyone who loves is born of God and truly knows God.” 1 John 4:7 (The Voice)

Something Loved

Showing love, is the something I loved in February! It’s often easy to take Valentine’s Day for granted after spending 39 of them together. Not wanting that to happen, I decided to celebrate with my husband all week leading up to the 14th. What a great time I had picking out little favorite treats I know he enjoys and then coming up with silly sayings to go along with them. It brought me joy to remind him that he’s still the ONE for me! Showing someone they’re loved is always the best gift and we don’t have to (and shouldn’t) wait until Valentine’s Day to give it!

“With every sun’s rising, surprise us with Your love, satisfy us with Your kindness. Then we will sing with joy and celebrate every day we are alive.” Psalm 90:14 (The Voice)

Something Read/Said

In a Voxer message, a friend recently read me some words that truly made my “heart sing”! When I messaged back asking where she’d found them, she shared this wonderful book with me. Sally Lloyd-Jones knows how to speak words of God’s love to the soul. A devotional, “Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing” is that special combination of being written for children and yet, within the pages and illustrations are messages everyone longs to hear, no matter their age! I’m looking forward to sharing this beautiful little book with my grandsons and reading it for myself when I need to, as the Author’s Note says, “listen to whatever God wants to say to me” about “how He loves me and how I can love him”.

“I (God) appeared to them from far away and said: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love-out of faithfulness I have drawn you close.’ ” Jeremiah 31:3 (The Voice)

Something Treasured

Love in real time across the miles: That’s what I treasured in February! My sisters and I spent our early childhood in California while our grandparents lived in Michigan.  The only way for them to share in our lives was through rare, expensive long distance phone calls or after the fact in letters sent across the country. The same was also true for my Mom after we girls went our own ways. While we too are separated by miles, how grateful I am to be able to share in my kids’ and grandsons’ day to day lives right as things are happening! How fun to see the boys play in the first snow of the winter, watch our youngest grand beginning to crawl, and view our son’s craftsmanship displayed at his first show! There’s no doubt that for this Mom and MiMi, loving in person is best; but, being included in long distance, real time love is something I’ll always treasure, too!

“But now faith, hope, and love remain; these three virtues must characterize our lives. The greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 (The Voice)

Something Ahead

They began in December at the Prayer Tree: my prayers for the Covid vaccine.  Since then, I’ve been hoping and praying for the call that I received this morning. It’s my turn! I’ve waited and watched as the 80+ crowd received their shots, then the 70+ crew, and now….the 60+ gang that I’m part of are up! I’m not just looking ahead to March 4th though, I’m also looking ahead to what March 4th and the vaccine mean. Soon I will, without fear of unknowingly making someone sick, finally be able to spend time with family. My calendar can once again become a place of plans to gather with friends, birthday celebrations, and holiday traditions! While “normal” of 2019 and “normal” of 2021 will most certainly look different as we move ahead, these remain: faith that God is working all things for good, hope in what’s to come, and most of all, love that never ends!

I “love” this practice of looking back before we look ahead. I’d love to hear your reflections on February! Just share them in the comments if you’d like. I continue to be grateful for your presence here with me and my pondering. You are a blessing to me! Happy March!

Breathing In

It’s been a while since I’ve written….don’t ask, but today I’m back at it and doing double duty writing to the http://www.fiveminutefriday.com prompt “Breathe” and sharing “My Four Somethings” over at http://www.heathergerwing.com in the same post. Feel free to click over and see what others have to say.  I know you won’t be disappointed!

Breathing In
September Share Four Somethings

Something Loved

“For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” Job 33:4 (NLT)

I’m not a fan of hot weather. There’s just something about the summer air that feels stifling. My mind, body, and soul seem to always be gasping for refreshment; but September has offered the respite I’ve been longing for. Fall has arrived here in the mountains where I live, and coming along with it are the cooler temperatures I love.  Bright blue skies, open windows, leaves dancing on crisp breezes…. I’m breathing Fall in!

Something Read

“Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous-how well I know it. Psalm 139:14 (NLT)

As I wrote last month, I’ve had an avoidance of reading and it has followed me from August into September. But I’m determined to change that and this is the book that’s going to do it! Most people who know me would NOT say that I’m an Introvert, but I am. I’m not sure why, but I’ve always done my best to try and act like an Extrovert. Just a guess, but it’s probably been an attempt to be “like everyone else”. (We all know how that goes, don’t we!)  Trying to be someone you’re not is exhausting! Anyone out there know what I’m talking about? The words on the back cover of this new book resonate so with me:

“Holly Gerth shares everything you need to know to… help you beat your struggles and maximize your strengths so you can live with clarity, courage, and confidence in a world that needs what only you can give.”

“What only you can give”…God didn’t create us to be someone else and I’m anxious to learn more from “The Powerful Purpose of Introverts”. Who knows?  Maybe I’ll finally begin (at 61) to marvel in the authentic, wonderfully complex me! I’m breathing possibility in!

Something Treasured

“And now, may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you have spoken, and when you grant a blessing to your servant, O Sovereign LORD, it is an eternal blessing!” 2 Samuel 7:29 (NLT)

Being together with those I love, anytime, anywhere is wonderful; but oh, how I treasure the times we gather here at home! The end of September found our house full of activity, noise, and pure joy as our kids and grandkids gathered to celebrate family birthdays. Even my Mother-in-love got in on the fun! Four generations together: catching up, telling stories, eating, and laughing, and playing. This house and all those in it were blessed. I’m breathing gratitude in!

Something Ahead

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Romans 12:12 (NIV)

Looking ahead, it’s still not easy to do in these uncertain times. I must admit that I’ve struggled a bit this month. Even though I recognize how truly blessed I am, discouragement and defeat have tried to blindfold my mind’s eye, strangle my heart, and smother my soul. I need reviving! Can I get an “Amen”? Wouldn’t you know, that at just the right time this new study has come along. “Praying for Revival” begins next week and I’ll be joining in. A God wink for sure! I’m looking ahead and I’m breathing in HOPE!

“Let everything that breathes sing praises to the LORD!
Praise the LORD!
Psalm 150:6

What about you? What has your September brought? What are you “breathing in”? I’d love for you to share in the comments! As always, I so appreciate you being here with me and my rambling thoughts. God Bless!

Share Four Somethings ~ August 2020

August 2020 Share Four Somethings

August 23rd….In some ways it doesn’t seem possible that we’re this far into 2020 and then again, it feels like it’s taken a long time to get here! But the end of August is where we are: a time of back to school ads on TV, towering sunflowers in the garden, and Share Four Somethings right here! My month was rather quiet and status quo and that’s a good thing these days; but let me share with you just a few highlights….

Something Loved

“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.” 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV)

Our church Christmas tree is large and difficult to move. Each year we struggle to get it in and then struggle to get it back out of the sanctuary.  It takes many hands. This year, for several reasons we were short handed, and so, the tree stood there unadorned in the corner. Then Covid 19 hit and we could no longer go to church.  That’s when I decided to take a little piece of church to our congregation. So far, this Christmas tree has become an Easter tree, Patriotic tree, and everything in between.  (This is our August Summer tree) I’ve loved decorating it with a monthly theme and then sharing pictures and a greeting with our members through our FB page and email. It’s brightened my mood to see it come to life and I pray that, even though we aren’t together, it’s helped make our church family feel just a little closer, too!

Something Read

“Everything in the Scriptures is God’s Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. The Scriptures train God’s servants to do all kinds of good deeds.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17(CEV)

Books are stacked on my bookshelves and side tables and yet, for some reason I just haven’t picked one up to read in a long time. (Too much Netflix binging maybe) Despite not having a book to offer you, I have been participating in an online Bible Study called “Arise: Seeking God as Your Hiding Place” at http://www.faithfullyfollowingministries.com Each day they offer scripture to read and study, a free journal to keep notes in, and insight into each day’s subject. So far my take-aways have been: “Arise and Refocus on Him, Arise and Follow in Hope, Arise and Let My Heart Sing, Arise and Shape My Worries into Prayer, and Arise and Release.” I’m inspired and encouraged through the women who share in this study and am grateful for the wisdom and words they offer. I’m looking forward to all I’ll read and learn in the next week as it finishes up.

Something Treasured

“Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life.” Proverbs 22:6 (GNT)

There are lots of blessings that come with being a teacher, but one of my favorites is watching my little Second Graders grow up and move on into the world. Even better, when they reach out and let me celebrate with them. This year in addition to announcements, I received a thank you note that included words that I’ll treasure as they warmed this ole teacher’s heart and brought tears to my eyes. It reminds me how important all our interactions with others are. We never know how God will use us to touch others or how He’ll use them to change us!

Something Ahead

“Grandparents are proud of their grandchildren, just as children are proud of their parents.” Proverbs 17:6 (GNT)

Well, we’re down to days until the arrival of our new grandson and I’m ready to pack up and go as soon as I get the call! Every day as a MiMi has been a gift and I’m looking ahead to all the reading stories, singing songs, baking, playing, cheering on, and making memories with THREE grandsons! MiMi X 3 = Love, Love, Love!!!! (and maybe a little exhaustion added in)

Well, there you have it, a glimpse into my August in a few paragraphs.  Now it’s your turn! I’d love for you to share your Four Somethings for the month in the comments so we can help celebrate your month with you. Oh, and as we move into September, best of luck to everyone playing a part in starting school. May your year be blessed!

I so enjoy this practice of Sharing Four Somethings! If you’d like to join in or read more just click over to http://www.heathergerwing.com I look forward to seeing what September offers us.  It’s my prayer that we find our new normal and move forward with our confidence in God who is in control of all our months. As always I’m so blessed to have you here with me. It means more than you can know.

Share Four Somethings ~ July 2020

Has anyone seen July? I mean where did it go? Time these days seems stuck and fleeting all at the same time! Well, one good thing about being at month’s end is that means it’s time for “Share Four Somethings” at  http://www.heathergerwing.com  Here are mine:

Something Loved

“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’ ” Matthew 19:14 (NIV)

We are now able to count down in days until baby Sutton makes his appearance. I’m so thankful I was able to go be with my daughter and family this month. There were several jobs on my to-do list, including to help in getting our little one’s bedroom ready. Being able to have a hand in preparations means the world to me and I loved feeling useful and needed while I was there.  We accomplished many things and I think they are now in pretty good shape for becoming a family of five. My sleeping accommodations were a little different on this visit. Two little munchkins requested that “MiMi” camp out in the their room each night and so of course, I did. Loved that, too!

Something Read

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:11

In the midst of all this social distancing, I’ve been invited to several virtual parties and who doesn’t like to party? So of course I joined in and had fun seeing new and different things for sale.  One of the purchases I made was this devotional, “100 Days of Joy and Strength” by Candace Cameron Bure.  Originally, I thought I might give it as a gift; but after looking through it, I decided to keep it for myself.  Am I ever glad I did!  Reading the short daily entries is both encouraging and challenging. Included each day are also an accompanying Scripture verse, room to jot down your own thoughts, and a prayer.  I’m enjoying it so much that I think I will buy a few more to actually give as gifts this time!

Something Treasured

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 (NIV)

A God wink and timing are everything! Let me take you back to my visit to my daughter’s this month. When we set the dates for it, I had no idea that my daughter’s sweet friends were planning a surprise baby shower for her at that very same time.  When they found out I was going to be there, they didn’t hesitate to include me in on the surprise.  While it was stressful to try and get her there without giving it away, I will always treasure the memories of being able to be there and experience the surprise standing by her side! The shower began with a prayer that was so precious we all had tears running down our cheeks. Those tears didn’t last too long because the “Taco ‘Bout A Baby” evening included a taco bar, beautifully decorated fiesta cookies, a delicious piñata cake, lovely gifts, and lots and lots of laughter. I’m so grateful July included this surprise for my daughter… and me!

Something Ahead

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11 (NIV)

I don’t know about you but planning ahead seems impossible right now. Last month I talked about my blank calendar page and nothing has really changed since then. But, even though I’m not stepping out the door to do something, I am stepping out of my comfort zone. Before the day’s end I will have sent the first children’s story I’ve written to be critiqued by someone I don’t know….a professional!!!  As I look ahead to the next few weeks of waiting for the results, I feel a mixture of excitement and dread. I’m not sure how I should prepare to receive remarks that may be hard to read, except to remember they are remarks that will help me make this little, baby stage story grow into a better one.

From a baby’s room to a baby shower to a baby story: July has been a month about birth, I guess. And, just like any birth, it’s been hard, exhilarating, exhausting, joyful, and a little scary.  That’s life isn’t it? How about your July? What things will you remember from this past month? I’d love to know.  Just leave them in the comments if you’re willing.  As always, I so appreciate you stopping in to read the ramblings of my scattered mind.  (I’m afraid this pandemic has only made it more scattered, too.) I hope this finds you happy and well. May God bless your August!

Share Four Somethings ~ June 2020

Time is strange when it’s not anchored by a calendar! With nothing to do or plan for, the days seem to pass one the same as the other.  Sometimes I feel like they drag on forever and yet, here I sit, it’s July 1st, and I have no idea where June went! I’m glad to be joining http://www.heathergerwing.com today for her “Share Four Somethings”. Maybe it will help me hold on to June for just a moment more!

Something Loved

I’m a storyteller at heart.  I think that’s why photographs mean so much to me! Each picture evokes a memory and shares a story. That’s why I loved participating in the #junejoy Instagram Challenge this month. Every day there was a new prompt and I looked forward to searching through my many, many, MANY photos to find just the right one. Some, spoke for themselves, and others allowed me to tell the tale. Pictures and words….now that’s a combination I love!

Something Read

One of my favorite things to do with my grandsons is to read them their bedtime stories. We often choose long-time favorites like Dr. Seuss, Berenstain Bears, Ferdinand the Bull, and many more. But, what’s really fun for me is to discover new “favorites” like this one! “I Wonder” is a cleverly written book that asks its readers questions that make you, well…wonder. As much as I love this book, listening to my littles offer their own answers to these whimsical questions is the best part of reading it! Something read with my grandsons always brings me great joy!

Something Treasured

We’ve just returned from our annual pilgrimage to the beach. When we first began talking about making the trip, I didn’t think it would happen. Mostly because I’m a Nervous Nellie and was apprehensive about traveling out of state (or anywhere for that matter) with everything going on in the world. But, after a lot of prayer and seeking wise advice, I found no one who supported my worry and so I decided to pack up my concerns as I packed the suitcases and we set off on our adventure. Oh, how thankful I am that we did!

We’ve traveled to the same wonderful spot for over twenty years now. And while this trip wasn’t quite the same as we’ve been used to (masks, take out, crowds) my soul was still refreshed by the rhythm of the rise and fall of the sea; and, in a place where many memories have been made with our kids, we now have made new ones with our grandkids to treasure.

Something Ahead

Do you find it hard to make plans these days? I find myself saying, “if this or that doesn’t happen” or “let’s tentatively set”. It’s as if I’m protecting myself from being disappointed if things don’t work out by just not really planning anything because honestly, who expected to be in the situation we’re in now?  I’ve sensed a change in the last week or so though. I’ve begun to think about the possibility of finally visiting my mom in Michigan. We haven’t been together since October and I’m ready for some mother-daughter time for sure! OK, I haven’t written anything on that blank calendar page yet, but I am looking ahead and hoping that by taking all the precautions necessary, we can safely be together very soon!

Well, there you go: June in a few paragraphs. I’m praying that July brings us all peace, health, and things to write on our calendars! I’d love to hear your “Four Somethings”. Share them in the comments so I can learn what your June was like. As always, I so appreciate you stopping in! God Bless!

Share Four Somethings ~April 2020

“Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church-a love marked by giving, not getting. Ephesians 5:25 (The Message)

Something Loved

This montham my something loved! Whether it’s a note left by the full coffee pot when I rise each morning, a bottle of my favorite Dunkin Donuts Iced Mocha Coffee tucked among the groceries (not easy to find in our store), or beautiful spring flowers gathered precariously from the hillside and brought home: I feel loved

Because of his offer to do all of the grocery shopping so I don’t have to go out, the prayers said holding hands at the table, and words he’s spoken to encourage my lagging confidence: I feel loved!

In our almost 37 years we’ve had many ups and downs, but through it all we’ve learned a valuable lesson, one that we’ve been reminded of in these last few weeks: the importance of showing how much we care for one another! And that’s what we try to do. This month as we’ve spent more time than usual together, I’m reminded what a gift God gave me when He plopped me right in the living room of a young farmer so many years ago! There’s no doubt: I AM loved!

“Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God-which of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NLT)

Something Read

Oh my goodness! This study has come at just the right time with just the right words I need! Here’s the thing, under normal circumstances I wouldn’t have been able to join in.  Originally, the ladies at Faithfully Following Ministries had planned to study Gideon locally, in North Carolina, where I do not live. But, because of social distancing, they were unable to gather so decided to offer it online. Lucky me! And on top of that, unexpectedly, the publisher has offered the usually costly videos that accompany this study to everyone for free! Everything came together and now we’re about half way through the study. Have I learned so much already! I’ve added it as another “Pandemic Positive” on my list!

“I will remember the works of the LORD; yes, I will remember Your wonders of old. I will reflect on all You have done and ponder Your mighty deeds.” Psalm 77:11-12 (BSB)

Something Treasured

As I wrote in my last blog post, I received a note from my mom in which she included two letters I’d written to her in 1985 right after our county was ravaged by a deadly flood. Reading them took me right back to that scary, uncertain time and reminded me of all the emotions that accompanied that devastation. Unexpectedly, those letters have been an encouragement to me in this crazy time we’re in. They showed me first of all, how much better off I am now than I was back then. Rereading them has also helped me remember how God saw us through that time when we didn’t have any idea what the other side would look like. That’s why I’m treasuring these letters today; because, they reassure me He is at work, seeing us through this pandemic, too!

“Children are a blessing and a gift from the LORD.” Psalm 127:3 (CEV)

Something Ahead

As an ole retired teacher, my heart has been heavy thinking about all the students who are out of school, especially the Seniors and the very young children. Keeping my two and four year old grandsons entertained is challenging under the best of times, but now their mom and dad are trying to work full time from home too. Needless to say, it’s rather stressful! So, I’ve been trying to help out (long distance) a little. I must admit it’s been fun for me to search out and mail activities for the boys to do.  I’ve even found a few that we’ve been able to work on together via FaceTime. Those are my favorite, of course! The most recent is this little greenhouse we made. Now, even though theirs hang in a window four hours away from mine, I’m looking forward to all the discussions ahead that the three of us will have as we watch our beans sprout and grow! I’m not sure though, which are growing faster, the beans or the boys!

Well, there you have it! My Four Somethings for the month of April and while it’s been an unusual month, I have been blessed in many ways! How about you? What are your Four Somethings? I’d love for you to share them in the comments.  I hope you know how much I always appreciate you being here with me and if you’d like to read what others have found their Four Somethings to be, just click over to http://www.heathergerwing.com God Bless you and be well!

#Sharefoursomethings ~ January 2020

Share Four Somethings

A new year, a new chance to reflect on life each month by sharing “Four Somethings”.  The categories have changed a little this year and we’re now highlighting “Something Loved”, “Something Read”, “Something Treasured”, and “Something Ahead”. Here are mine from this past month:

Something Loved

“Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children.” Proverbs 17:6 (NLT)

Full house = Full heart! I love when my kids and grandkids are all gathered at our house! It’s fun to go and visit them, but there’s just something that fulfills those parenthood dreams (and a momma’s soul) when they come “home”.  There’s a popular saying: “Home is where your story begins” and that’s so true. Even better now? Home is where the story continues!

Something Read

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” Proverbs 27:17 (NLT)

“Walking With Henry” by Rachel Anne Ridge has been my January read.  I’m actually not quite finished yet.  I’ve been reading and discussing it with a friend which makes the insights and encouragements found within the pages that much more richer and meaningful. It always touches me when someone I’ve never met and who’s living a completely different life than mine, can write just what I need to hear! It just goes to show that we’re a lot more similar than we know! If you are like me and love a book that inspires, makes you laugh and cry, and that resonates with your soul, this one’s for you!

Something Treasured

“I remember the days of old. I ponder all your great works and think about what you have done.” Psalm 143:5 (NLT)

Look what I found in my mailbox! It took me a while to put it together, but the work was worth it! I’ve always treasured photographs! They adorn the top of my piano, cover my walls,  hang on my refrigerator, and fill album after album (and now book after book)! Special people, places, and events…..Remembering them brings me great joy!

Something Ahead

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” Proverbs 3:3 (NIV)

New Year’s has always been a time of goal setting. I’ve never been too keen on it though. Mostly because I hardly ever follow through on mine. Especially when they have to do with weight loss or exercise! (Which they usually do)  Even as much as I enjoy writing, committing to the goal of #Write28Days took some convincing; but in the end, the challenge of writing to a prompt and the chance to join with other aspiring writers won out. Now, my little mind is filled with a jumble of thoughts and ideas as I look forward to writing for as many of the 28 (or 29 as is the case this year) days as I can in February! And hey, if you love a challenge too, there’s still time for you to join in on the fun!
