Trust the Transfomation

Trust in the Transformation

It’s always amazing how God teaches me lessons right where and when I need them using what’s familiar. Honestly, I think that’s why so many happened in my Second Grade classroom. He knew I required the “elementary” version! Now retired, I can look back and see how, like my students, the foundation I received there helps me continue to build on and trust those basic truths I’ve learned.

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

These words came alive during a favorite project of mine that included one of God’s most mysterious miracles! Every year, my students and I would begin to collect Monarch Caterpillars. Filled with Milkweed to feed them and long twigs to climb on, a large, glass jar on the Science table became their new home and the venue for us to observe an incredible transformation.

Metamorphosis (a profound change) doesn’t happen overnight, but it didn’t take long to recognize that once a caterpillar moved as high as it could go on a stick, the process had begun. That’s just what one of our “guests” did while I was working late at school.

Determined to watch the process from start to finish I settled in. Somewhere between caterpillar and chrysalis, this teacher became the student. It no longer was just a caterpillar’s rebirth I was witnessing; I was also gaining a better understanding of my own. A familiar unit, alone in my classroom, at a time I felt stuck between the old me and becoming “a new person”, amazing God at work? No doubt about it!

I don’t know about you, but I often feel like a caterpillar, slugging along, always looking for the next best, tasty thing to consume, hoping it will satisfy my hunger. And just like a caterpillar, that’s usually when we begin to feel something stirring deep within that compels us to think Higher and prepare for change.

Surprisingly, what struck me the most as I witnessed this wonder of nature, was the struggle. Back and forth the caterpillar swung, writhing as if fighting with all its might against what lies ahead. (Something else we have in common!) Then I blinked. On the branch in the same spot where the caterpillar had been resisting change, hung a chrysalis. The fight was over.

Maybe, like me, as a Christian you too find yourself suspended between old ways and the new life Jesus offers. Fear, worry, perfectionism, and so much more seem to continually worm its way back into our lives, but here’s the heart of the lesson: The struggle is real, but my friends, the fight is over! Jesus hung in our place and was encased in the tomb, taking our sins with Him.

For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Romans 6:4 (NLT)

Excitement always built as the children and I waited for each butterfly to emerge. Through every opened chrysalis that released a new creation with furled wings and shaky legs, The Teacher continued His lesson. Even though the cycle was complete and the old caterpillar nature was replaced with the new nature of a butterfly, it took time for each one to stretch its wings, to be a butterfly. I’m learning, and I hope it encourages you, that the same is also true for us.

“Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like Him.”
Colossians 3:10 (NLT)

Did you catch that? Becoming more like Christ is a profound change. As we learn to know our Creator, we become like Him. Becoming more like Christ doesn’t happen over night. It’s a life long process of learning, knowing, and trusting. Just like the Monarchs in my classroom project, with patience, practice, and lots of love, God takes who we think we are and completely transforms us into who He knows we were always meant to be! As we spend time in our relationship with Christ, we can be certain He is working within us and that our “new life” has begun..

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished
on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Philippians 1:6 (NLT)
We can trust that!

Jesus Rules!

I was honored to write this post as part of a series called, “Blessed” at   http://www.faithfullyfollowing.com You can click over to read more of their inspiring words or find them on their Facebook Page called “Faithfully Following Ministries”. Jodie and Donna inspire me and refresh my soul. I know they will do that for you, too!

Jesus Rules!

You don’t have to spend too much time with me before a few of my “quirks” begin to introduce themselves; like, “Hello, I’m a recovering rule follower.”  Many years ago my little girl heart shattered when my dad walked away from our family. As it began to heal, a lie cemented itself in the cracks and I grew up convinced that if I’d only been better, done better, maybe my dad wouldn’t have left. And so, in an attempt to “be good” the confines of adhering to rules slowly but surely became my comfort zone.

“Praise the Lord! Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.” Psalm 112:1 (NIV)

So, what happens when a rule-loving gal reads in the Bible about being delighted and blessed by following commands like in this verse? Well, just imagine a high five being lifted toward heaven and the words “I’ve got this,” slipping from my lips.

“You shall not murder.” Check!
“You shall not commit adultery.” Check!
“You shall not steal.” You get the idea.

Maybe like me, you think having a commandment check-list complete with heavenly high fives sounds “delightful,” but here’s what I’ve been learning: Obeying the rules isn’t what brings us true blessing. Remember the rich, young man? (A champion rule-follower, himself!)

“As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. ‘Good teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’

‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good-except God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’

‘Teacher, he declared, ‘all these I have kept since I was a boy.’

Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come, follow me.’ ” Mark 10:17-21 (NIV)

Friends, Jesus looks at us too, and He loves us more than we can comprehend (quirks and all). His love is so great, He went to the cross to release us once and for all, from the bondage of rules we were never able to obey on our own in the first place. What the young ruler missed, and sometimes we do too, is that following the rules doesn’t change us; following Jesus does! And while we don’t have to go and sell everything, we do need to rid ourselves of all that keeps us focused on our own efforts rather than on Him.

In life, there will always be rules to obey. The delight comes when we walk away from depending on our own performance to gain a father’s love or whatever we’re in search of, and instead, with thanksgiving, pursue the One who’s already blessed us with everything we’ll ever need.

“But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.” Romans 7:6 (NLT)

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.”
Ephesians 1:3 (NLT)

Share Four Somethings ~ August 2020

August 2020 Share Four Somethings

August 23rd….In some ways it doesn’t seem possible that we’re this far into 2020 and then again, it feels like it’s taken a long time to get here! But the end of August is where we are: a time of back to school ads on TV, towering sunflowers in the garden, and Share Four Somethings right here! My month was rather quiet and status quo and that’s a good thing these days; but let me share with you just a few highlights….

Something Loved

“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.” 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV)

Our church Christmas tree is large and difficult to move. Each year we struggle to get it in and then struggle to get it back out of the sanctuary.  It takes many hands. This year, for several reasons we were short handed, and so, the tree stood there unadorned in the corner. Then Covid 19 hit and we could no longer go to church.  That’s when I decided to take a little piece of church to our congregation. So far, this Christmas tree has become an Easter tree, Patriotic tree, and everything in between.  (This is our August Summer tree) I’ve loved decorating it with a monthly theme and then sharing pictures and a greeting with our members through our FB page and email. It’s brightened my mood to see it come to life and I pray that, even though we aren’t together, it’s helped make our church family feel just a little closer, too!

Something Read

“Everything in the Scriptures is God’s Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. The Scriptures train God’s servants to do all kinds of good deeds.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17(CEV)

Books are stacked on my bookshelves and side tables and yet, for some reason I just haven’t picked one up to read in a long time. (Too much Netflix binging maybe) Despite not having a book to offer you, I have been participating in an online Bible Study called “Arise: Seeking God as Your Hiding Place” at http://www.faithfullyfollowingministries.com Each day they offer scripture to read and study, a free journal to keep notes in, and insight into each day’s subject. So far my take-aways have been: “Arise and Refocus on Him, Arise and Follow in Hope, Arise and Let My Heart Sing, Arise and Shape My Worries into Prayer, and Arise and Release.” I’m inspired and encouraged through the women who share in this study and am grateful for the wisdom and words they offer. I’m looking forward to all I’ll read and learn in the next week as it finishes up.

Something Treasured

“Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life.” Proverbs 22:6 (GNT)

There are lots of blessings that come with being a teacher, but one of my favorites is watching my little Second Graders grow up and move on into the world. Even better, when they reach out and let me celebrate with them. This year in addition to announcements, I received a thank you note that included words that I’ll treasure as they warmed this ole teacher’s heart and brought tears to my eyes. It reminds me how important all our interactions with others are. We never know how God will use us to touch others or how He’ll use them to change us!

Something Ahead

“Grandparents are proud of their grandchildren, just as children are proud of their parents.” Proverbs 17:6 (GNT)

Well, we’re down to days until the arrival of our new grandson and I’m ready to pack up and go as soon as I get the call! Every day as a MiMi has been a gift and I’m looking ahead to all the reading stories, singing songs, baking, playing, cheering on, and making memories with THREE grandsons! MiMi X 3 = Love, Love, Love!!!! (and maybe a little exhaustion added in)

Well, there you have it, a glimpse into my August in a few paragraphs.  Now it’s your turn! I’d love for you to share your Four Somethings for the month in the comments so we can help celebrate your month with you. Oh, and as we move into September, best of luck to everyone playing a part in starting school. May your year be blessed!

I so enjoy this practice of Sharing Four Somethings! If you’d like to join in or read more just click over to http://www.heathergerwing.com I look forward to seeing what September offers us.  It’s my prayer that we find our new normal and move forward with our confidence in God who is in control of all our months. As always I’m so blessed to have you here with me. It means more than you can know.

In The Bag

“I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4 (NLT)

In The Bag

Many years ago, I found myself with a group of fifth graders and their teachers at Environmental Camp. It was something this “stay inside, comfort zone loving, faint-hearted” girl was not at all prepared for and much to my dismay, my fun-loving, push-the-limit supervisors were very much aware of it! Even so, challenges were met, tasks accomplished, and conditions endured that I never thought possible. But, the real test came with the arrival of a canvas bag!

Being placed in the front row, should have alerted me that something was amiss. While the students listened attentively to the presenter standing in front me, I scarcely heard a word.  Instead, my eyes were fixed on the large, squirming canvas bag that lay at his feet. The longer I sat and stared, the faster my heart beat, the more difficult it felt to catch my breath, and as the guest began to untie the rope that held the twitching bag closed, I wanted nothing more than to escape; but there I was, face to face with fear!

As you might have guessed by now, the Herpetologist had pulled an enormous Boa Constrictor from the sack. As he spoke about the winding creature he held; he moved so that he strategically stood where the reptile and I were literally cheek to scaly cheek. My stomach in knots, beads of sweat on my forehead, and screams building in my throat, I sat frozen in my chair. Hearing snickers from the back of the room and feeling all eyes on me, I was determined not to give those who plotted this plan, the satisfaction of seeing fear get the best of me!

Truth be told, this wasn’t the first time I’d been consumed by fear, and sadly, it wasn’t the last, either. Fear has camped out with me for as long as I can remember. It’s difficult to think about the many times being afraid has kept me frozen not just in my chair, but in life. Maybe you can relate. How many times have we let fear wrap around and hold us back from meeting new people, responding to a need, experiencing adventure, following our dreams, and so much more? And now? We find ourselves sitting face to face with a time when every newscast, case update, restriction, symptom, and distanced day leaves us open to fear slithering in, making our new found, smaller lives feel even more constricted.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like dwelling in small, tight places, however, when we’re in fear’s grip, it can feel as if there’s no room for anything else. And guess what?  Feeling confined and believing there’s no way out is all part of the serpent’s plan! BUT…here’s what I’m learning: Fear can’t trap us because we have an Escape, One who is with us always, and wants the best for you and me!

“When hard pressed, I cried to the LORD; he brought me into a spacious place. The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid.” Psalm 118:5-6 (NIV)

When we fix our eyes on God and lay our fears at His feet, He not only frees us from their grasp, but He also brings us into a “spacious place”. A place where our hearts beat to the rhythm of His peace, we can breathe deeply in His Spirit, and where with his help, we can finally put our fears back “in the bag” where they belong!
