Day 31/31: Perseverance

Run the race. Keep the pace. Eyes on Jesus

Day 31: Perseverance #writetogether31days

There’s a young woman I know who has set a goal for herself. She’s done what it takes to be prepared, but to reach the bar she’s set for herself, she must pass several tests. She studies, applies what she’s learned, drives the miles to get to the test site, sits through the exam and then anxiously waits. Sometimes the news is worth celebrating and other times she learns that she was just a few points short and must try again.

As I sit here the ponderer I am, and look back over what I’ve written during these 31 days, I realize it is the very same for me. I know who I want to become, but to get there also requires being tested. Such is the life of a Christian.

I’ve done what it takes to be prepared in accepting Christ as my Savior. Studying the Word and applying it to my life helps me “practice what I preach,” to be ready to go that extra mile, and  when I’m anxiously waiting in the midst of those tests and trials, to endure. Sometimes it seems as if I’m gaining in my quest for greater faith and at other times, it’s clear I’m coming up short. Feeling like I take one step forward then two steps back can be quite discouraging.  Maybe you can relate.

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”
James 1:12 (NIV)

“Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
James 1:3-4 (NIV)

I know it can be discouraging for my young friend too, but the thing I so admire about her is, she does try again, and again if necessary. She perseveres and studies, practices, drives the miles, braves the testing and waiting all over again to finish what she’s started. Without knowing it, she inspires me to do the same.

I pray for her, and myself, and for you too, that as we face those things that test us, we don’t give up. As Hebrews 12 tells us, “let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” May we not grow weary or lose heart, but try again, and again if necessary. “Blessed is the one who perseveres.” Yes, these 31 days (and many more) are teaching me: such is the life of a Christian. And even when it doesn’t feel like it, that’s news worth celebrating!

Mercy~Five Minute Friday

“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing and rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3:4-5 (NIV)

Mercy

I remember standing in front of a classroom of rowdy Second Graders and thinking it. Or whispering it under my breath as a toddler lay screaming and kicking at my feet. More times than I’d like to admit, I’ve shouted it from behind the wheel of my car. And now, in the midst of a pandemic, with storms raging, and people choosing sides, the words have flowed from my heart and across my lips again: “Lord, have mercy!” Have you been there?

“Lord, have mercy”:  Three words that slip easily from the tongue without much thought. The reality though, is that they are life-changing words we need to say with intention, not in our frustration when we’re at the end of our rope with others, but when we find we’re finally at the end of ourselves.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,” 1 Peter 1:3-4 (NIV)

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)

I don’t know about you, but when I look around, I’m reminded of what the world has to offer: a pandemic of sin, storms of discontent raging, and brothers and sisters standing divided rather than together. The world needs saving. WE need saving!

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17 (NIV)

Are you at the end of doing it on your own? Have you said the words? If you haven’t, now’s the time. Whether you think them, whisper them, or shout them, let “Lord, have mercy” flow from your heart to God and step out of this world and into His living hope.

If like me, you’ve accepted the mercy of Jesus’ sacrifice, then let’s challenge one another to share the love we’ve received with those around us, on our social media feeds, and with those who are watching from afar. Like Paul, we were shown mercy so we can offer His mercy to others.

“But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.” 1 Timothy 1:16 (NIV)

Life changing words. World changing words. Eternity changing words.

Lord, Have Mercy!

A Challenge ~ Five Minute Friday

Jesus said, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” John 13:15 (NIV)

Technology is often a challenge for me.  I can still remember like it was yesterday, going to my first Teacher’s Technology Conference and feeling so overwhelmed.  One of the presenters even talked of “Technological Natives”: those growing up in and proficient at using all the different devices and then of the “Technological Immigrants” like me, who, being in a foreign land, must learn to navigate the World Wide Web, understand an unfamiliar language, and perform tasks that feel beyond our ability.  Like I said, a challenge.

Then along comes Kate , our leader at http://www.fiveminutefriday.com  and in two days this week she taught me things I hadn’t grasped before in blogging even though I’ve tried. Two days-two skills! The difference you ask? Kate taught by example, showing us step by step each action on her computer that we’d need to make on ours. Seeing it instead of just hearing or reading about it, has made it possible for me to follow her lead and successfully walk through the process myself! Now, it’s gotten me thinking. (You knew that was coming, didn’t you?)

As Christians, we are “Heavenly Natives” living our lives as “”Earthly Immigrants”. We try to navigate the world without being worldly, understand The Word, and carry out the work God calls us to do even though we feel unqualified. And, just as Kate did for those of us trying to master skills in our writing life, we have those who offer us examples to follow in our Christian life, too!

“Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.” Philippians 3:17 (NIV)

Listening to sermons and reading books by Christian authors have inspired me as I’m learning what it means to be part of God’s family. Jesus gave us the Perfect Example, but there have been and still are things I haven’t grasped. That is, until I’ve seen faith in action!  I’ve been blessed with many people from whom I’ve learned more about being like Jesus by watching the ways they’ve acted and interacted day to day. I’m sure you have a list of your own. Their examples show us the characteristics we hope to gain. With God’s guidance and as we follow their lead, they help move us closer to being who we were designed to be. And…that’s got me thinking again!

As we act and interact in the world, people are watching MY example, YOUR example, too! Now, that’s a challenge I think I’ll save for another post!

“And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.” Titus 2:7 (NLT)

Joining with Kate and the other talented writers at http://www.fiveminutefriday.com  as we think about the prompt “Challenge”. I challenge you (and myself)  to think about those people in your life who are examples of Christian living and then thank them for showing you the Way! Thanks for taking your time to stop! It means more to me than you know!

Share ~ 18/31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes

It’s hard to believe I’m half way through the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes!  Where has October gone?  If you’d like to read more or join in hop on over to http://www.fiveminutefridays.com

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage our hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 (NIV) / Pixabay

Ever done something and the outcome was not what you intended? We can set out with a goal in mind but what’s actually accomplished is the opposite of what we’d planned.  I’m afraid that writing my blog has been one of those times.

I tend to freely share my weaknesses with others.  It’s something I’ve always done and my blog is no different.  I’ve felt compelled to write about my personal challenges in becoming the Christian I hope to be.  In that process however, I’ve caused people who love me and whom I love to be concerned. That’s certainly not the reaction I’d hoped my writing would produce!

We all want those we care about to feel good about themselves and put their best foot forward. While my intent is to be encouraging, in thinking about it, I can understand that posting my struggles for all to see may make it seem that I am presenting myself in a negative light; that I’m hard on myself and I guess I am, but….. I’m OK with that.

Living a Christian life isn’t easy.  It takes vigilance. It takes work. It takes prayer.  It. Takes. Forgiveness. I don’t know about you, but I get discouraged with my progress. And so, I write. Sharing what I’m experiencing and feeling somehow clarifies and solidifies for me the lessons I’m learning.

Here’s the miraculous thing!  Most of the time, when I share the questions I have or the obstacles I face, it prompts others who’ve already been there to share their insights with me! At the same time, someone else shares that what God has inspired me to write about is exactly what they’ve been wrestling with, too!

No, living a Christian life in this world of ours isn’t easy. That’s why we need each other!  We need those who care enough to be concerned, those who teach and encourage, those who look to us for guidance, and most of all, we need the One who shares His love and wisdom with us all.

So, I hope you’ll bear with me as I continue to find my way in this life and share stories of my ups and downs, failures and successes, questions and more questions….  and I pray that somewhere in the midst of my ramblings, God will speak to and encourage your heart as He does mine.
