Day 22: Danger

“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves” Colossians 1:13 (NIV)

Dangerous Predator

“Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love:
Take my heart, oh, take and seal it
With Thy Spirit from above.
Rescued thus from sin and danger,
Purchased by the Savior’s blood,
May I walk on earth a stranger,
As a son and heir of  God.”
~Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing~

Something had caught my eye outside the window. An unfamiliar looking bird was perched motionless in the lilac tree. It took me a minute to finally realize that the small, oval shaped, smoothed-feathered bird statue clinging to a branch for dear life, was actually a usually large, boisterous, crown-wearing, self-assured blue jay. That’s when I knew that a hawk was hovering close by and my blue jay friend was in danger. Wary, he was doing all he could to conceal himself in hopes of avoiding attack and becoming a morning snack.

You know, there’s a devious adversary who’s hovering around us too, and unfortunately he’s also a master of disguise. Patiently, he unassumingly lurks nearby, and before we know it, he’s able to capture us when we least expect it. I’m talking about Satan of course, the fallen angel from above. The ruler of this world we live in. (explains a lot about all that’s happening, doesn’t it?)

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)

Birds seem to have an innate sense when danger is near, but I, maybe you too, sometimes willingly come within the predator’s reach. The thing is, once we’re enticed and snatched away from where we want to be, it often takes us a while to realize it because as most beasts of prey do, the devil toys with us for awhile and then before we know it, we’re consumed.

“But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:3 (NIV)

“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.”James 1:14 (ESV)

Deceived, lured, enticed, I can relate. But wait, my own desire? Your desire? I guess if we really stop and think about it, we do find ourselves in the grip of the devil most often because he was able to convince us that it’s fine to pursue the seemingly harmless things WE long for or that there’s no harm in avoiding those WE don’t want, even when we know better. We give ourselves away so the enemy knows right where we stand.

To avoid attack, that poor blue jay stayed frozen in his spot for a long time. Nothing moved. Except, occasionally I noticed his eyes looking toward the sky. We are in the same kind of battle. Satan has so many wily ways to strike that it can leave us feeling stuck. That’s when we too, need to look up.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Ephesians 6:10-11

Luckily, the blue jay’s persistence paid off and the hawk eventually set off looking for new prey. The jay’s normal posture and personality returned and he quickly feasted at the feeders. Thankfully, God has already defeated Satan. He provides a defense for you and me and when we take our stance in His armor, we too can resist the one waiting to attack us. The predator is forced to retreat and we’re able to draw near to the One who provides the feast of everything we ever need to truly live.

Above ~ Day 11 ~ 31 Day Writing Challenge

“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves” Colossians 1:13 (NIV)

Above

When this sneaky intruder perched himself above my bird feeders I was NOT happy. Sitting perfectly still, he camouflaged himself silently amongst the branches waiting to trap and eat one of “my” birds. His presence there was also keeping them all from being fed.

You know, there’s a devious adversary who’s hovering over us, too. He’s a master of deceit and disguise. Patient, he lurks and before we know it he’s able to capture us when we’re off guard. I’m talking about Satan, The fallen angel from above. The ruler of this world we live in. (explains a lot about all that’s happening, doesn’t it?)

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)

There are few of us, myself included that willingly come within the predator’s reach. But once we’re enticed and snatched from where we want to be, it often takes time to realize it, because as most beasts of prey do, he toys with us for awhile before we are consumed.

Deceived, lured, enticed, but wait! My own desire? If we stop and think about it, most often when we find ourselves in the snare of the devil it’s because he was able to convince us to pursue the seemingly harmless things WE long for or avoid what WE don’t want.

It’s a battle. Satan has so many wily ways to tempt us (me), and once we succumb, we find it difficult to get close to Christ and His Word and our souls aren’t fed. That my friends, is when we literally begin to waste away. Thankfully, this is not the end of our story! God has already defeated Satan and provides a defense for you and me.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Ephesians 6:10-11

Luckily, when confronted, the unwanted hawk at my feeders fled and the birds returned to eat. The same is true when with God’s armor, we resist the devil. He retreats and we draw near to the One who provides all we need to truly live.

Observant or Serving

“Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” Romans 12:12 (NLT)

Observant or Serving

Look closely. Notice anything out of place in my peaceful bird feeding world? Yes! An intruder! As I watched out the window, I was amazed at how focused and in tune with all the birds’ movements he was. And all the while, they had no idea danger was near! Clearly, he had only one thing on his mind: to attack and consume one of my unsuspecting bird friends.

You know, there’s a prowler after us, too. He’s observant.  Our words and actions are familiar to him. Patient, he waits for the opportune time to pounce and disrupt our peace. Unfortunately, we also often fail to recognize his presence. He likes it that way. It makes us easy to prey upon.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.” 1 Peter 5:8-9a (NLT)

We’re living in challenging times, exactly the kind a predator enjoys! Now more than ever, we must be extra vigilant and on the look out. Alone, we’re readily vulnerable to his temptings and can be easily consumed, satisfying the enemy’s hunger for more. We must ask God to help us control our words, monitor our minds, think before we act, and to protect those weak spots (I) we each have from being targeted. Luckily, after discovering the trespasser, the bird restaurant didn’t stay open long.  Just as I ran off this unwanted neighborhood cat from his hidden hunting place before he was able to have lunch, we can deter the stalking devil before he devours us. God has given us everything we need for the fight!

“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all the strategies of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11(NLT)

We spend a lot of our time distracted, watching our phones, TV, other people, our bank accounts, and so much more. Let’s not forget to be alert to the one who lurks in the midst of it all. God has provided a defense so that we can stand firm and be strong in our faith, be a light in the devil’s darkness revealing his hiding places, and victoriously compel him on his way.

“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:13-17 (NLT)

May we remain ready for battle, always observant instead of becoming the next “serving” on the enemy’s menu!

Problem~Day 3~31Days2019

Problem

You just don’t expect anything to go wrong in a new house and yet there I was with a problem. A MOUSE problem! As I sat in the early morning quiet, drinking coffee, and minding my own business, an unwelcome sound interrupted the peaceful atmosphere. It couldn’t be! Surely not! But yes, it was the dreaded noise of little gnawing teeth that had caught my attention. Cautiously, I tip toed into the kitchen and there right before my eyes was a furry, pointed nose covered in whiskers poking out from underneath the corner of my stove! I don’t know who was more startled or disgruntled!  My first thought was, “How dare this intruder find a way into my home!” and the next was, “How am I going to get rid of it?”

Since then I’ve also realized I have another intruder. When it’s quiet, especially in the middle of the night, he finds his way into the corners of my thoughts, gnaws away at my confidence, and steals my peace of mind. You may have** guessed it: I have a devil problem, too. Now, how am I going to get rid of IT?

Funny as it seems, the devil and a mouse are an awful lot alike.( Awful being the key word!) A mouse likes to get into what’s stored in your cupboards while the devil digs up what’s stored in your past. Mice leave an evidence trail of filth behind and Satan pollutes our view with evidence of our failures , fears, and temptations. A mouse can actually look cute from afar and the devil knows exactly how to make his ways appear attractive to each of us, too. The mice soon learned how to remove the bait we left without triggering the trap and the evil one is even more cunning than that, ready to take what he can, when he can.

It wasn’t until we found and blocked the place where the mice were actually getting in, that we were finally able to keep our house free from further intrusion. We must do everything we can to block the devil’s attempts to enter into our lives as well.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:10, 13-17 (NIV)

Living in the country, our mouse problem will probably always be on-going but we’ve learned a few things and have gotten some tools to help us keep them out of the house. Living as a Christian, our devil problem will be a continuous one too, but God reminds us to stay alert and He provides each of us with everything we’ll need to make the devil flee: His truth,  righteousness, and peace, our faith in Him, our salvation in Christ, and His Word are the perfect tools to help us ultimately be victorious problem solvers once and for all.

Because God’s children are human beings-made of flesh and blood-the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of  the devil, who had the power of death.” Hebrews 2:14 (NLT)
