Talk….Or Not

I’m a talker. I love to tell stories, to think aloud.  Several years ago I was riding in the car with my husband and father-in-law; chatting as I normally do when it was suggested that I couldn’t be quiet for a designated period of time.  What? The gauntlet was thrown and the challenge accepted! Not only did I proclaim I could be silent for that period of time, but rather for the entire trip! The prize if I succeeded? My father-in-law had to buy me flowers.  I’ll have you know I won that contest….well… sort of……when the flowers finally arrived, the note on the card simply said: “Silence is Golden“! Kicking the Door

When my daughter was a toddler, she was “gifted” at making her needs, wants, and dislikes known!  Needless to say, she often found herself being reminded of more acceptable behavior.  It was in such a discussion that I had one of those eye-opening, a-ha parenting moments. As the potential punishment for her behavior was being described, she looked up at me with her big green eyes and with her hands on her hips and said, “Bring it on, mom!” It was then I realized the time for change had come. Brushing Up on Our “How To”

One of the kids’ and my favorite assignments in Second Grade was always to write the steps of “How to Brush Your Teeth”! It was a rare time when they wrote furiously because they knew that their crazy teacher would follow the directions to act out some of their compositions. Quickly scanning each paper as I walked through the aisles helped me choose the perfect ones to demonstrate.

Asking for volunteers who were sure they’d written every step, without fail each hand would always go up. Some stretched as high above their neighbor’s as they possibly could get.  Others waved back and forth to grab my attention. And still a few more added excited grunting noises to accompany their enthusiastic hand gyrations.  Continue reading

Inspired Comfort

Being a teacher, mom, and now MiMi, I’ve learned one important lesson when it comes to comfort: a cool cloth and a bandaid do wonders for a hurting child. Whether you can see the mark or not, they feel injured and so, the act of offering a remedy and reassurance goes a long way in quieting a little one’s fears and easing their pain. Often, in the end, the child wears the bandaid  proudly like a medal, proving to others that while discomfort had threatened to overtake them, they’d come out victorious, battle scars and all! A Work In Progress

I’d hoped by now to be the one
Thought wise beyond my years
To have all the answers
And conquered all my fears.

I’d hoped by now to understand
The plan prepared for me.
Able to step out of my comfort zone
And finally feel free.

I’d hoped by now to believe
I’m brave enough to do
Everything that’s needed
To make my dreams come true.**

I’d hoped by now to count it joy
In good times and in need.
To pray instead of worry.
Follow not try to lead.

It’s becoming quite apparent
I’m not yet who I hope to be.
Simply a work in progress
On my way to victory.

So I’ll run with endurance
The race God’s set for me
And fix my eyes on Jesus
Until His hope is all I see.

Love is Meant to be Shared

Cleaning out my classroom after teaching for 32 years was no easy feat! That’s a long time of saving, creating, collecting, and reusing! It took many short trips to the dumpster and one LONG trip down memory lane!

Deep in the corners of drawers, cupboards, and shelves I found trinkets, artwork, photos, rocks, dried flowers, even petrified candy children had shared with me throughout my career.  Precious things that this teacher just couldn’t throw away! In amongst those treasures were also a variety of love notes from my students.  Some scribbled on scraps of paper, the backs of old spelling tests, and others drawn with crayons or markers, filling the paper with colorful images. Many letters had no name on them to identify the writer, just the words “I love you” in a child’s print of long ago. These presents brought me joy when they were first given and continued to give again these many years later. Continue reading

Why Not?

Why not take care of two things at once?  The prompt for today’s 31 Days of Free Writes is “Why” and it’s time to post my September edition of “Four Somethings” so I’ve decided to combine them in to one! I love it when things come together!  Don’t you?

~Something Loved~

 

Do you ever find yourself asking the question “why”? I think we all do. It’s a question I don’t really like though, because most often there isn’t a ready answer. That was the case for me in September.  We’d been planning our beach vacation to our favorite spot in North Carolina for months; then Florence made her grand entrance and changed everything. Don’t get me wrong: I’m grateful to only have lost a trip and not my belongings or life but I wonder of all weeks, why the storm had to come then? Continue reading

Believe

My mouth watered as sugary sweetness mixed with greasy goodness wafted on the breeze.  Stepping in time with a symphony of calliope music, loud voices, and laughter we took our final walk down the Midway.  The weight of my last quarter felt heavy as I clenched it tightly in the sweaty palm of my small hand.  How would I ever decide what to spend it on as our day at the fair came to a close? Choices bounced around in my head just like the balls being hurled at bottles in the stands we were passing as we made our way to the exit.

My eyes darted this way and that searching for the perfect ending to a perfect day. And then I saw it!  The brightly lit sign promising a sight never seen before. A sight you surly didn’t want to miss. The Amazing! The Unusual! The One and Only…….Three Eyed Bull!  The adults tried to dissuade me. Not one other quarter carrying kid would go with me, but l could not be deterred. Loosening the grip on my last coin, I walked determinedly to the opening of the small barn. Having exchanged my money for a ticket, I stepped into the dark, cool room and there, right in front of me was……. Continue reading
